Expectations

In order to receive a Putney diploma, you must fulfill academic requirements, as well as live up to your responsibilities in all areas of our program. You will be expected to participate fully in Courses, in Afternoons, in the Evening Arts Program, the Work Program, Project Weeks, the Land Use Program, dorm life, assemblies and special events. The Putney faculty votes on each student’s eligibility for a diploma.

We operate on a trimester system, in which a 2-trimester course counts as 1 credit and a 1-trimester course counts as .5 credits. Students take, on average, 4 courses in a trimester, and must earn at least 5 credits per year. A diploma from The Putney School reflects four years of planned study, which will typically include 20 or more credits. Additionally, students must satisfy the following distribution requirements:

  • 3 credits of lab science including 1 credit of biological science and 1 credit of physical science
  •
  • 1 credit of english each year
  •
  • 2.5 credits of history or social sciences including .5 credits in the senior year if the student does not enter the senior year with 3 credits.
